Sudan continues to plunge deep into crisis. Millions are fleeing their homes. More than 93000 of them crossed borders into Ethiopia.
Ethiopia is grappling with its own humanitarian crises. In its northernmost Tigray region over a million displaced people require assistance. While severe drought has created hunger killing dozens in Tigray and Amhara. There’s flooding in Somali and Southern Ethiopia regions while multiple conflicts have left millions in precarious conditions.
Also- it has a huge refuge population. The UN estimates more than 900000 refugees from neighbouring countries like South Sudan, Eritrea and Somalia reside in Ethiopia.
Now with Sudan’s conflict showing no sign of ending the number of people crossing borders is increasing as data from the International Organization for Migration (IOM) shows.
Two bordering points, Metema in Amhara and Kurmuk in Benishangul-Gumuz are preferred by those who are fleeing the violence.
Among those who’ve arrived in Ethiopia above 36000 were Sudanese nationals while the largest share were Ethiopians who had resided in Sudan before the conflict. Individuals from 76 countries have crossed into Ethiopia, many of them to travel to their respective countries.
Violence erupted in Sudan in April this year between the army and the Rapid Support Forces, two armed groups that were once allies.
Thousands are believed to have been killed and the humanitarian crisis is worsening. Several peace efforts including by the US and Saudi Arabia have failed and there are fears the crisis could continue.
Neighbouring countries like Ethiopia could be impacted by continued violence in their doorsteps.
