3.2%. That’s how many of the students registered to take Ethiopia’s secondary school leaving exam in 2023 scored passing results. In real numbers, close to 850,000 high schoolers sat down for exams they are required to pass to join universities across the country and those who managed to get above average results are less than 28,000. The figures have been roughly similar to numbers from a year earlier. At the time, Education Minister Berhanu Nega (prof) said the severely underwhelming results show how the education system “and we as a society failed.” But substandard exam results are just one of the many problems facing Ethiopia’s education.
